Facebook or LinkedIn for business networking?

There is a really interesting and active thread in the eMarketing Association Network Group on LinkedIn. The question raised by Marco Schreurs is: “Do you see Facebook groups as a business network? Or should we focus on linkedin?” With over 150 responses he has stated a question that raises a lot of passion and engages analytical minds. In my case, my answer is straight forward and focuses on simplicity. Here is what I said: I do not currently see FB as a strong way of building or engaging my business network, if with business network you mean corporate colleagues, vendors,...

Why you should own your online infrastructure!

Do you put all your online efforts into one egg basket? On occasion I work with business owners who put all their online efforts onto someone else’s infrastructure. They will always hear me argue that they need to stay in control of their assets! There is no doubt that it is compelling to build out your presence on a rich platform, be it eBay, Amazon, Facebook, WordPress.com or any other platform. However you need to consider the risks… Today’s example came from an unexpected direction; Hotmail decided to change my interface into Turkish. The problem is that I don’t speak a word...

Why you should blog #1: It makes you smarter

It is time to continue the series on blogging that was started with “Why don’t you bin that corporate blog?”, continued with “7 reasons I recommend my clients to blog” and with the last installment “Where are you official and where are you private?” As I am putting on more social media training activities the opportunity has now turned to blogging. Confessions of a Klout junkie

I am sad to confess that I check out http://klout.com at least once per day. My only reason for doing so is to see if I have managed to climb one single step higher on the virtual ladder. I know it is completely ridiculous. I don’t even understand how they measure the score. When I look at people that have many times more followers than I but significantly less Klout score it makes me think that I have other values that are recognized. But what are they? “Tall, blond, Swede, business owner, looking for matching project?” Well I guess dating attributes won’t provide the answer. If you know...

Lots of things on my mind; From Quora to Al Jazeera

This post is a bit disjointed, but maybe it will make some sense. About 18 months ago I cancelled my cable TV subscription. I was thoroughly fed up with paying significant amounts of money each month to watch commercials. It was a sort of double dipping -but turned upside down and inside out! Here I pay for a service, and I am presented with complete rubbish that others have paid to put in front of me. What sounds wrong with that model? Well, I decided I was too smart to be deceived any longer. Whether I was smart or not, I couldn’t stand the commercials no matter what. To counter some...

When Social Media go Wrong –1– The Enterprise Dilemma

Large corporations carry big burdens causing them to break their customer relationships over and over again. This first post in the series “When Social Media go Wrong” explores how the transition from “traditional” marketing to using social media marketing will backfire in organizations that are not ready to truly embrace the expectations that come with it. Imagine a small product group in a large enterprise, they are just about to bring a new product to market and they want to do the “right thing” – they want to connect with the customers, listen to their feedback and engage in a...
